I recently took my kids on an nature adventure to Breakheart Reservation for a little exploring. Little did they know that my main reason for “exploring” was to capture a few portraits of Eli for his 5th Birthday. :) I have to be sneaky with ulterior motives because every time I take out my camera, my kids run for the hills! It’s so hard to get portraits of them without extreme bribing. “Fine! I will get you a puppy when we’re done.” “Yes, we can get two more Guinea pigs.” By now, you’d think have a farm full of animals if I was an honest Mom. Ha! Luckily, they don’t hold these bribes against me and most times, a yummy ice cream treat works just fine. :)
My baby boy is five today. FIVE! How did that even happen? I mean, it was just yesterday I was taking photos of Amelia holding up a big announcement sign that read, “I’m going to have a baby brother!” In these short five years, Eli has brought so much unconditional love and joy into our family. He’s the best little brother (even though Amelia may say otherwise) and he’s so loving and caring to his family and friends. He melts my heart every time he says, “Mom, I love you sooooo much” totally out of the blue – and not while we’re out shopping like his sister (I’m totally on to her!). He’s smart and loves all things animals. He says his favorite animal is the Honey Badger (have you all seen this video? It’s hilarious –and PG13) because it’s one of the “toughest animals in the whoooole wiiiiide world! That means all of Earth!” Or when I speak of any animal fact, he corrects me by saying, “Um, actually Mom, the Cobra is not the largest snake in the world. It’s the Green Anaconda and it can grow to 25-feet and have a 3-foot circumference!” What?! Does he even know what circumference means? I’d like to think he got his smarts from me, but really, Diego, the Wild Kratts and National Geographic Encyclopedia of Animals (his favorite book) play a big part, I’m sure.
If I were to pick just one word to describe him it would be SILLY! He’s so funny with the things that he says and does. Many times I’ll ask for him to fetch me something and each time he’ll return with something so random and not what I asked. For example, the other day I asked him to get for me a comb that was on the bathroom sink. “Okay, Mom” as he returns from the kitchen instead with a wooden spoon… laughing the whole time. Oh! That laugh! His laughter is so infectious and his smile just pulls at my heart strings. When his eyes disappear when he’s laughing it reminds me so much of my Dad. When my Dad smiled, his eyes disappeared too. So every time Eli laughs or smiles real big, I hug and squeeze him so tight and thank God for giving Eli a little piece of my Dad to remember him by … every day.

Special shout-out to Amelia for helping me to get Eli to laugh … it doesn’t take much, but it’s a whole lot easier when your crazy sister is making the silliest of faces while wearing your jacket that is two sizes too small!
